John Miller & Ginny Snowe Duo

Jazz standards and songs from the Brazilian bossa nova tradition

-Concerts, restaurants, private parties, weddings-

Ginny Snowe, on vocals and bass, and John Miller on guitar, bring you a repertoire that spotlights some of the very best of popular songs of the past 60 years. Drawing upon the works of such composers as Hoagie Carmichael, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Michel Legrand and Victor Young, Ginny and John have assembled a collection of personal favorites, characterized by consistently high standards of melodic, harmonic and lyric invention. Many of these songs were originally recorded in highly orchestrated versions; hearing Ginny and John's pared-back, transparent renditions of the songs makes it like hearing them again for the first time.

We recently spent a great afternoon at a type of event for which Gabriola is famous: a house concert. These are extraordinary affairs under almost any circumstances, usually a very satisfactory mix of friendly atmosphere and surprisingly high levels of musicianship, but this was, even with those expectations, an exceptional afternoon with the music provided by Ginny Snowe and her guitarist husband John Miller. He plays a fine understated guitar that is perfect for the sambas and ballads that Ginny seems to prefer. On an occasional solo he amply demonstrated his sensitive feeling for jazz and a firm confident touch . The focus of attention though with a duo is almost always the singer and what a fine fine singer Ginny is. With either sambas, which she sings in a style closely resembling Rosa Passos or jazzy ballads or the sly humourous eccentric songs of the kind that Blossom Dearie used to do so well, she brings a clear almost perfect voice and the careful, precise enunciation of a Carmen McRae and makes all of the songs entirely her own by her intimate, almost confidential style and her dry interpretation which somehow manages to be demure and mischievous at the same time. The songs selected by Ginny and John were of impeccable provenance and despite being standards used by countless great performers in the past were given uniquely memorable interpretations by this talented pair. Like Ginny’s bell-like tones, this performance will resonate with us for a long time. -Mick Wadsley, Gabriola Island
